The term “democratization of space” refers to the increasing accessibility and participation of a wider range of actors (i.e. states, corporations) in space exploration and utilization
The landscape has changed significantly in recent years due to the following factors:
- Cost Reduction: Reusable rockets, miniaturization of satellites, and new production techniques have made space more affordable for many countries and private companies
- Private Sector Involvement: Companies (such as SpaceX and Blue Origin) are pioneering new technologies and business models, enabling easier access to space for a wider range of stakeholders
- International Cooperation: As space activities become more global, countries are participating for collaboration in joint projects, sharing/exchange of resources, international aid/subsidy for developing states
- Public Engagement: Educational programs, citizen science projects, and amateur satellite launches
